Reason 1: Snoring or Breathing Abnormalities

If you snore while sleeping or have a daytime breathing abnormality, then you can have a dry mouth. You may notice the xerostomia issue when you wake up, or perhaps, you are breathing through your mouth because you have a stuffy nose. Fortunately, there are ways to overcome breathing problems with the use of decongestants or using a CPAP machine while you are sleeping.

Reason 2: Yeast Infections Inside the Mouth

When your tongue or the palate of your mouth has a fluffy white coating, you may have a thrush infection. This condition can occur for a variety of reasons, including contamination from dirty eating utensils or glassware. If you have an autoimmune disorder, then you are more likely to develop a yeast infection inside the mouth. A physician can prescribe oral medications or mouth rinses to eliminate the yeast infection.

Reason 3: Diabetes Mellitus

If you have diabetes mellitus, then you may develop a xerostomia problem. This issue is one of the side effects from having diabetes mellitus, but it doesn’t happen to everyone with the condition. When you aren’t monitoring your blood sugar levels properly, you are more likely to have a mouth that is too dry, and also, certain types of medications for diabetes mellitus can cause xerostomia.

Reason 4: Smoking or Vaping

Vaping or smoking can change the way that your oral tissues and saliva glands react, so if you have a dry tongue, palate or inner cheeks, then this is one more reason to stop the bad habits. The nicotine in cigarettes can reduce the flow of saliva inside your mouth, and the chemicals in vaping liquids can cause the same problem.

Reason 5: Dementia Conditions

A senior citizen with xerostomia may have a dementia condition, including Parkinson’s disease. Dementia conditions affect the brain’s signals, making it difficult for a senior citizen to notice when she is thirsty. By maintaining a daily hydration schedule, it is possible to reduce the feeling of dry soft oral tissues inside the mouth.

Reason 6: Anxiety or Stress

If you have had a stressful day, then you can have mouth that seems dry. When you are anxious, your body produces cortisol that can increase perspiration, making you feel dehydrated. This type of dry mouth problem is easy to overcome by drinking more water along with reducing your anxiety.

Reason 7: Medications

Many medicines, over and under the counter, can cause dry Mouth. These medicines include decongestion, antihistamines, and medicines for diseases such as depression, respiratory problems, and heart disease.

Reason 8: Radiation

People who suffer from cancer in their mouths or head region have to get radiation. There are high chances of radiation affecting saliva production as they damage your salivary glands.

What Should You Do For Dry Mouth?

There are multiple ways you can treat dry Mouth at home. For instance, you can keep up with your hydration levels or suck on frozen fruits to keep your mouth moist. Breathing through your nose also helps you with ensuring that your Mouth does not go dry.

If the atmosphere is too dry and is causing your Mouth to go dry, too, it is a good idea to invest in a humidifier, which will increase humidity levels while you sleep. If you have exhausted all home remedies, you can use mouth sprays or artificial saliva to keep your mouth from drying out.

Dietary Changes

Making dietary changes can help you treat dry Mouth. For instance, you should start eating foods that are easy to chew so you don't have to rely on saliva often. Moreover, you can increase your intake of liquids in your meals and drink water frequently so you can stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol, acid-based foods, and dry and irritant food items. You should also let go of sugary drinks or caffeine, which can reduce saliva production.

Visiting a Physician

When you can’t overcome a dry mouth problem, you should visit a physician for the medical issue. A physician can examine your mouth, collect blood samples and conduct other tests to help you. With the right treatment, you can overcome most types of dry mouth problems.

Very friendly team! I just completed my Invisalign treatment today, and Im thrilled with the results. Dr. John and the team explained everything that was happening, and what to expect in between visits. Always available to answer any questions which is a big plus. We were referred to them by my dentist for my teenage son who also had amazing results! I totally recommend them.

I was extremely pleases with the orthodontic care that both of my children received from Abdoney Orthodontics. Their attention to detail, ease of contact and Scheduling, and caring staff and Drs made these past couple years very enjoyable. Their team makes you feel more than just a patient or a chart. Everything is very transparent so you know what you are being billed and charged and if you have any questions they take the time to explain anything to you. This is not only a top-notch orthodontic practice, but a very well run company that feels like a small town business. I have one more child that will need braces and we will surely come back.
