We are usually taught from young on that certain foods are bad for our oral health. We think of certain foods as "bad" for our smiles and dental health, while other foods get a pass. How many of these foods are secretly beneficial? Here are some that may surprise you.

1. Chocolate

This may come as a shock because sweets are usually painted in a bad light when it comes to oral health and hygiene. It turns out that chocolate contains antibacterial properties. Dark chocolate is especially effective. You can now eat your chocolate in moderation without guilt, because it may actually help prevent cavities.

2. Cheese

Dairy, such as cheese, is healthy for your smile in numerous ways. It contains high levels of calcium and Vitamin D, which strenthen teeth from the inside out. Not only that but the lactic acid in cheese may even remove stains from tooth enamel. Snacking on cheese can give you a healthier, whiter smile.

3. Apples

Apples are usually considered a healthy food. It turns out they are good for dental health as well. Chewing apples, especially with skin on, can remove plaque from your teeth. Apples have vitamins and minerals to boost your overall health, too.

4. Celery

Many dental health professionals recommend snacking on celery to improve your dental health. Celery contains natural antibacterial properties. This means it can help prevent plaque and tartar buildup that leads to cavities. Another thing that celery contains is malic acid. Malic acid can stimulate saliva production. Saliva is the body's natural method of cleaning your teeth. Whether you like celery raw with dip, or in soups and stews, it will be a beneficial food to add to your diet.

5. Strawberries

Strawberries are a delicious food that many people enjoy. They can be eaten plain as a stand-alone or made into smoothies and juices. You could even have dark chocolate-dipped strawberries to cover two of the foods on this list at one time. Strawberries are good for dental health because, like celery, they also contain malic acid. They contain xylitol, as well. This natural chemical keeps bacteria from reproducing, therefore helping you to avoid dental issues such as gingivitis and tartar buildup. Xylitol is often added to dental care items like toothpaste, mouthwash, and gum for these benefits. Strawberries are good food for your dental health, so feel free to snack away.

6. Blueberries

Blueberries are considered a dietary superfood. They are nutritionally dense while not containing as much sugar as some other options might. Blueberries have antioxidants that help the body stay healthy, They also contain polyphenols. Polyphenols are powerful natural dental health boosters. They protect the teeth and gums, helping to avoid diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis. When you do snack on fruits, try to avoid or limit the number of dried fruits you are eating, as they can have added sugars or stick to your teeth and cause issues.
