Proposed Data Center in Citrus County Sparks Concern Among Greater Tampa Bay Residents

by Michael Abdoney - 05/10/2026 -Tampa

As your local orthodontists serving families across Valrico, South Tampa, Riverview, and Wesley Chapel, we care deeply about the communities we call home. That’s why we’re paying close attention to major developments happening across the greater Tampa Bay area — including a proposed large-scale data center in Citrus County that has many residents voicing strong concerns.

According to a recent Tampa Bay Times report, a developer is exploring the creation of a roughly 1,300-acre industrial park in Citrus County that could include one or more hyperscale data centers. If built, it would be among the first of its kind in Florida.

Why Are Locals Concerned?

Data centers are essentially massive warehouses filled with thousands of computer servers that power everything from cloud storage to artificial intelligence. While they bring economic benefits and jobs, residents at recent planning meetings raised several important issues:

  • Huge electricity demand — Data centers can consume enormous amounts of power, potentially driving up utility costs for local families and straining the regional grid.
  • Water usage — Many facilities rely on large volumes of water for cooling systems.
  • Noise and visual impact — Constant fan noise and large industrial buildings could affect the rural, Nature Coast character of the area.
  • Land use — Converting wooded areas into industrial zones raises questions about long-term environmental effects.
  • Infrastructure strain — Roads, utilities, and emergency services may need significant upgrades.

Dozens of Citrus County residents attended public meetings, shared petitions, and expressed their desire to protect the area’s natural beauty and quality of life.

What This Means for Greater Tampa Bay

This proposal is part of a broader statewide conversation. Similar data center projects have faced pushback in other parts of Florida, with concerns about energy reliability, water resources, and balancing growth with livability.

Here in the greater Tampa Bay region, we already face challenges with rapid population growth, drought concerns, and infrastructure demands. Any large development must carefully weigh economic gains against impacts on our environment, utilities, and daily life.
