A toothache may be one of the most painful medical conditions a person can experience. In most cases, the pain gets worse at night. This can make going to sleep nearly impossible. Once that terrible pain strikes, there are some remedies that help get rid of the pain.

There are many proven ways to help with nighttime toothache pain

  • Over the counter pain medication like Tylenol or Advil is a great way to get rid of moderate pain. Unfortunately, these medications do very little if the pain is severe. If so, you may need to talk to your dentist about providing you with something a little more potent
  • A cold compress is also a good way to lessen pain. Wrap a small bag of ice in a towel and put it against your jawline. This blood vessel restricting method will help you get a better night's sleep.
  • Elevating the heat may keep the blood from pooling. This can also help cut the pain.
  • Numbing relief gel that you can apply directly on and under the tooth can also supply temporary relief.
  • A good saltwater rinse will reduce inflammation and loosen remove particles from teeth and gums
  • Hydrogen peroxide rinse will also reduce inflammation and prevent gum disease
  • Peppermint tea is an old remedy that works well to numb sore gums
  • Clove placed directly on the tooth or in the cavity can quickly reduce pain and inflammation
  • Garlic is a strong antibacterial. It will also kill bacteria that lead to tooth pain. Just take care not to use too much

The following can result in a toothache:

  • Loose fillings
  • Abcess
  • Jaw trauma
  • Wisdom tooth coming in
  • Food particles in teeth or gums
  • teeth grinding
  • periodontal disease

It is advisable to see a dentist every six months to maintain optimal dental health. If you are having tooth pain, your dentist will do a thorough checkup to find the source of the problem. They will provide the appropriate treatment for gum disease, abscess, tooth decay, or any other issue that could be causing the discomfort.

If you are experiencing a toothache, first start out with over the counter medication. If you continue to have pain over the next week or two, make an appointment to see a dentist. You issue could be more serious than you think.
